Zirconium silicate is an extremely stable (refractory, hard, dense) material that is used in refractory, sanitaryware and porcelain fine china manufacturing. Large quantities of zirconium Silicate is used in the sanitaryware and tile industries. Due Its high thermal stability properties Zirconium Silicate is also employed in making various hi-tech refractories, porcelain bodies and coatings materials.
Zirconium Silicate is also used to produce zirconia, zirconium metal and zirconium chemicals. These are high value and growing applications for which total consumption of zircon is becoming significant. The chemicals and metals extracted from Zircon represent the apex in the modern nuclear and aero nautical engineering.
Sri Lanka’s beaches contain good quality heavy mineral sands deposits. Of these minerals Zirconium sand is currently mined, purified and exported without any further value addition
FACTS
